Substrate
- Paper towel or textured tile — the safe defaults: easy to clean, zero ingestion risk, ideal for quarantine, juveniles, and any gecko recovering from illness.
- A firm sand-soil mix — many experienced keepers use a naturalistic blend (commonly around 60-70% organic topsoil to 30-40% play sand) with adult, healthy geckos. It holds burrows and looks like their native habitat.

Heat is the area where errors do the most damage, because digestion, immunity, and appetite all depend on it. The goal is a gradient — a warm zone and a cool retreat — never a uniformly warm box.

Heat sources and the non-negotiable thermostat
- Overhead heat (halogen flood lamp or deep heat projector) is the approach most current guidance favors, because it warms both the surface and the air above it, the way sun-warmed rock does.
- Under-tank heat mats are the traditional option and still workable, especially paired with a thin substrate layer — but a mat alone may leave air temperatures too cool in a cold room.

Lighting and UVB
Leopard geckos are crepuscular and were long kept successfully without UVB, using dietary vitamin D3 instead. Leopard Gecko Humidity
Leopard geckos want a dry enclosure with one humid microclimate:
- Ambient humidity: roughly 30-40%, measured with a digital hygrometer. Brief swings outside that range are normal; sustained high humidity in a dry-species setup invites respiratory and skin problems.
- Humid hide: always available, kept moist with damp sphagnum moss. The gecko will use it heavily around sheds.
If your home runs humid, improve ventilation (screen top, drier substrate) rather than adding heat to "burn off" moisture. What Do Leopard Geckos Eat?
Leopard geckos are strict insectivores. No fruit, no vegetables, no commercial "gecko diets" formulated for fruit-eating species.
Good staple feeders
- Crickets — nutritious and stimulating to hunt; remove uneaten ones after feeding.
- Dubia roaches — excellent nutrition, easy to keep, can't jump or climb smooth surfaces.
- Black soldier fly larvae — naturally calcium-rich.
- Mealworms — acceptable as part of a rotation, though fattier and chitin-heavy; better as a component than the whole diet.
- Treats only: waxworms and butterworms are the candy of the feeder world — occasional, not weekly staples.
Size prey to your gecko: a common rule of thumb is insects no longer than the space between the gecko's eyes.
Gut-loading and dusting
Feeder insects are only as nutritious as what they ate. Gut-load feeders for 24-48 hours before offering them — fresh vegetables and a quality gut-load diet. Shedding, Handling, and Health Warning Signs
Shedding: geckos turn dull and grayish, then shed in patches and usually eat the skin. Your job is simply a functioning humid hide.
