What Humidity Do Ball Pythons Need?
Ball pythons do best with ambient humidity in the range of roughly 55–70%, measured with a digital hygrometer at mid-level in the enclosure. During a shed cycle, raise it above that everyday band — to roughly 65–75% — so the old skin comes off in one clean piece. Sustained humidity below about 45% is where problems start: stuck shed, retained eye caps, and gradual dehydration. Why Humidity Matters More Than Most New Keepers Expect
Humidity does three jobs for a ball python:
- Shedding. A properly hydrated snake sheds in one piece, nose to tail tip, including the eye caps. Dry air makes the old skin tear and cling.
- Hydration. Ball pythons lose water continuously through their skin and their breath — air leaves the lungs saturated no matter how dry it arrived. Humid air slows that loss; dry air speeds it up. Snakes rehydrate by drinking and from the moisture in their prey, not by absorbing water out of the air, so chronically dry air is a slow drain on the animal even when it drinks.
- Respiratory health. Both extremes are risky. Very dry air irritates the airway; constantly wet, stagnant, poorly ventilated air encourages the bacterial growth behind many respiratory infections.

Measure Before You Change Anything

How to Raise Humidity in a Ball Python Tank
Work through these in order. Most low-humidity problems are solved by the first three steps, no gadgets required.
1. Restrict the screen top
An open mesh lid is a chimney: warm, humid air rises straight out. Cover 60–90% of the screen with aluminum foil, HVAC foil tape, or a cut piece of plexiglass, leaving an uncovered strip for ventilation and keeping any covering safely clear of contact with hot lamp fixtures. This one change often lifts ambient humidity substantially on its own — commonly by ten points or more, depending on your room and heat source.
2. Upgrade and reposition the water bowl
Use a large, heavy bowl and place it on the warm side of the enclosure, where evaporation is faster. The snake also gets a soaking option it controls. Refresh the water at least every couple of days.
3. Pour, don't just mist
Misting spikes the hygrometer for an hour, then the surface dries and you are back where you started. Instead, pour water directly into the corners of the substrate every few days, so it soaks to the bottom layer and evaporates slowly. Mist lightly on top of that only if you need a short-term boost, such as during shed.
4. Add a humid hide
Fill a snug hide box with damp (not dripping) sphagnum moss and place it on the warm half of the enclosure. Now the snake can self-regulate: even if ambient humidity dips, it has a micro-climate at shed-friendly levels whenever it wants one. This mirrors the burrow humidity the species evolved with.
5. Fix the heat source if it is fighting you

Foggers and misting systems can work, but they are the last resort, not the first: run unmonitored, they soak substrate and create the stagnant-wet conditions that cause scale rot. If you use one, put it on a timer or hygrostat and keep the substrate surface dry.
Ball Python Humidity Too Low: Warning Signs
Catch a dry enclosure by watching the snake, not just the gauge:
- Shed comes off in pieces instead of one continuous sock, or patches of old skin stay stuck, especially on the tail tip.
- Retained eye caps — the spectacle over one or both eyes stays cloudy after the rest of the shed is done.
- Wrinkled or dull skin and sunken appearance, suggesting dehydration.
- Extended soaking in the water bowl. Occasional soaking is normal; living in the bowl usually means the air is too dry (or, separately, a mite problem).
For a stuck shed, raise humidity, offer a humid hide, and allow a supervised soak in shallow lukewarm water. Never pull dry, adhered skin, and never pick at retained eye caps — a torn spectacle is a vet-level injury. - Condensation permanently fogging the glass

- Mold spots, mushrooms, or a sour smell
- Pink or brown discoloration on the snake's belly scales (early scale rot)
If you see these, increase ventilation, remove saturated substrate, and let the enclosure dry toward the middle of the range. Brief spikes into the 80s after pouring water are harmless; weeks of saturated bedding are not.
Keeping It Stable: A Simple Routine
Stability comes from buffering, not fiddling. A realistic weekly rhythm looks like this:
- Daily: glance at the hygrometer morning and night; top up the water bowl.
- Every 2–3 days: pour water into substrate corners if the reading trends below the mid-50s; re-dampen the humid hide moss.
- Weekly: stir the substrate to check for wet spots or mold; spot-clean.
