Yes. Every powered reptile heat source needs a compatible thermostat unless the equipment manufacturer explicitly supplies another documented control system. The thermostat must match the heater’s control method and electrical load, while separate thermometers verify the actual warm and cool zones. A thermostat is not optional insurance: it is the control that prevents a continuously powered heater from running unchecked.
Buy for compatibility before features. An on/off thermostat switches full power; a dimming thermostat varies power; a pulse-proportional thermostat sends power in pulses. The right type depends on the heater manufacturer’s instructions. A more expensive controller is not better if it uses the wrong method, cannot carry the load or puts its sensor outside the range the animal uses.

When is a dimming thermostat worth buying?
A dimming thermostat is the usual starting point when a compatible light-emitting basking lamp needs proportional control. Instead of repeatedly cutting all power, it changes the power supplied as the measured temperature approaches or moves away from the set point.
The RSPCA leopard-gecko guide explicitly uses a dimming thermostat for its basking lamp. Arcadia says its current dimming model is suited to light-emitting heaters and Deep Heat Projectors, subject to the model’s stated maximum load. This can make dimming the right control method even when a cheaper on/off device would physically accept the plug.
Check what happens at low demand. Some lamp and thermostat combinations may produce very low visible output or behave outside the intended operating range. The manuals, not the socket shape, determine compatibility.
When does pulse-proportional control fit?
Pulse-proportional controllers vary delivered power by changing the pulse pattern. They are generally paired with compatible non-light-emitting heaters that can accept that control. A pulsed visible lamp would visibly fluctuate, so do not assume pulse mode suits a basking bulb.

If a controller offers several modes, verify the active mode after every setup change and power interruption. A stored set point does not prove the correct mode was retained.

Start with a written equipment match:

No. The controller display reports what its own sensor sees. It does not prove the temperature at the basking surface, inside a hide or at the cool end. Record both ends of the enclosure at the animal’s level while the empty habitat runs through complete day and night cycles. Confirm that the animal can move between the species-specific zones. A single centered reading cannot validate a gradient.
What should make you stop using a thermostat?
Disconnect the system safely and stop use if the controller reports a sensor fault, the probe is damaged, readings become implausible, the heater remains fully powered beyond the expected response, or the plug, cable or housing is cracked, wet, scorched, sparking or unusually hot. Reptiles can carry Salmonella while appearing healthy.
